PREPARING YOUR OUTDOOR SPACES FOR THE COLDER SEASONS
As the leaves begin to change, it is crucial to begin preparing your outdoor garden and lawn for their more difficult months to ensure the green life comes back again next Spring.
1. Rake Your Leaves: While the shades of red and yellow leaves on the ground can be quite picturesque, it is important to remember that they can be damaging to the lawn underneath. Thick layers of leaves can smother grass and promote fungal diseases. Be sure to pick up some compostable bags on your next trip to the garden center!
2. Protect Fragile Plants: As temperatures drop, its important to take steps to protect tender plants from frost. Consider covering them with burlap or frost blankets overnight and move potted plants indoors when necessary.
3. Give Your Garden Beds Some TLC: Clear out any unwanted weeds from your garden beds to prevent pests and diseases from taking over during the winter. Add a layer of compost/mulch to enrich the soil and protect plant roots from frost. This will ensure your garden sprouts right back up when the springtime sun comes back around.
4. Clean and Store Equipment: Before winter arrives, clean and properly store your lawn equipment. Drain and store hoses, clean and sharpen mower blades, and prepare any other tools for winter storage.
5. Take Advantage of the Season: Autumn is a beautiful time to encourage healthy plant growth. There are plenty of Fall-blooming flowers you should consider adding to your space. Mums, roses, and sunflowers all bloom around September and October.
These tips will help your lawn and garden endure the cold months ahead to ensure they emerge healthier/greener when Spring arrives. Embrace the beauty of the season as you prepare for the winter ahead!
